ZVL Season Ends With Epic Battles

The ZVL sand volleyball league finished up its 2010 summer season with some exciting play at Victory Lanes Sports Park on July 14th.

Kelsey Touvell and Julie Shaw showed they are still the team to reckon with from a year ago. The pair who won the 14’s division last season topped Megan Ryan and Haley Kimberlin 21-13, 16-21, 17-15 for the 16’s division title.

Last season’s 14’s runners up at 13 years old, Holli Beenau and Tristyn Smith-Sommers won the 14’s this season with a 23-21, 21-15 win over club teammates Chelsea Tippets and Maddy Crouch.

The 12’s were decided by just a few points. In one of the closest 12’s matches in ZVL history, the team of Londyn Merriot and Regan Leonard topped Lauren Olson and Chloe Schei 21-16, 11-21, 17-15 in the third set.

The 18’s were taken by Shelby Lehman and partner and Savannah Wells, both who drove from Wickenburg every Wednesday to compete, over Surprise’s own Julie Duarte and Tiffany Halvorson 21-10, 21-10.

Congratulations to all 34 teams that competed in the ZVL this season. Congratulations to our winners and Thank You’s to Ashley and Cory who helped out the last night, Mike Krueger and Victory Lanes and the Victory Lanes staff.

See you next summer!!!

Blue Crush Finish First in Region Tournament

On Saturday Blue Crush started off the weekend with a win against Club Views 14’s. The first game was lead by Ally with 8 consecutive serves and from there the girls never looked back. In the second game we struggled a little with our serves, however Haley and Jimena had many great swings that kept up the momentum throughout the game.  The second match was a little tougher, going to 3 games against Zona’s 13-1’s. With good serve receive passes from Becca and Miquie mixing up the sets we fell short 21-25. However, wanting to finish in the top 2 the girls took game two with great hits from Rylee and Brooke, and great sets and defense from Miquie. In game 3 we came out with another win with great hits from Kaitlin, Jimena and Ashley. Our third match against Arizona Primitive was won in two games. The girls all played very well together, deserving our first place finish.

They topped Club Fluid's 15-1's team and the AVA 15-1's squad in straight sets getting to a throw down in the Gold Bracket with the tournament's number #1 seed, the Club Red 15-Red team. Playing steady and aggressively, the Rage topped Red 25-21, 25-20 to set up a Championship match vs. the East Valley Jrs. 15-1's team.

These will be used in the upcoming season and while the athletes will be taught the new rules and how to enforce them as officials, you as Parents need to know them as well.

You can find a video presentation of the new rules on YouTube here.

Please take some time to review them.
