Zia Shows Statewide AND WestSide Strength In Regionals Again

Zia's 2007-08 season once aqain saw significant finishes at both older and younger age groups, further cementing Zia's dominance in West Valley volleyball.

Only two clubs in the entire state had 4 or more teams finish in the top 5 of an age group and Zia was one of the two, despite having 13 less teams than the other Club.

Zia's 13 Serve's U Right squad took an impressive 4th in their 14's AA Regional tournament on May 31st, capping an impressive season.

Zia's 18-Edge took 4th place in the uber competitive 18 Open division, far outdistancing the other west valley offerings in the same division.

The Zia 15-Mob also capped an impressive outing by finishing 4th in the 16's AAA Championship Regional tournament held June 7th.

The 18- 3D squad took third place in the 18's Championship division capping a season that saw them in the top division most of the season.

Congratulations to all of our coaches, athletes and teams on another impressive season.

In Memory of Kelly Bell

Zia lost one of it's own this month with the passing of Kelly Bell. Kelly is Taylor's Mom and she will be missed very much.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family has set up a college fund for Taylor. To access this site, go to here

Zia's Melo off to Western Nebraska

Zia's 18's coach the past two years, Giovanna Melo has accepted the Head Coaching job at Western Nebraska Community College in Scottsbluff, Nebraska.

The Cougars are the defending NJCAA National Champions and Giovanna will take the helm of the ship in July.

She leaves ASU after a 3 year playing career and having spent the last two years as the Sun Devils Assistant Coach. She was also instrumental is helping Zia's 18's win the Arizona Region's Open Championship in 2007. We wish Giovanna well and hope to see her down the road soon.

Joining Ali Lund on the 18's Coaching squad is Sydney Donahue. Syd has been involved with Zia at Camps and clinics in past seasons. Donahue is an All PAC-10 performer as a libero and holds the career PAC-10 record for most digs. Her volleyball background is unparalelled and she brings a wealth of experience to the Edge in it's final month.

SoCal Finishes Show Continued Promise

Zia's 18-Edge followed up their significant finish in Colorado with a 20th place finish in the bloodlust that is the 18-Open division at the Southern California Qualifier. The Edge was the highest finishing Arizona team in the toughest division a National Qualifier has to offer.

Also having some good results were the 13 Serves U Right team who shook off a rough first day to earn a 5-4 record for the tournament and a 35th place finish.

The 14-Eclipse took their 4-3 record to a 53rd place finish at SoCal. Congratulations to all the teams that went and a HUGE thank you to all the Room Mom's who sacrificed for the cause.

Zia Shows Muscle at Crossroads Nat'l Qualifer

Zia flexed a little west valley muscle the past two weeks, earning some nice finishes at the Colorado Crossroads National Qualifier held in Denver.

Quickly becoming one of Zia's favorite qualifiers, Crossroads saw our 16-2 Legit 2 Quit team finish 18th overall in the 16 Club division, the highest finish of any Arizona team in that division.

Despite a tough first day, the 18-Edge squad took 26th overall in the ultra competitive 18 Open division. Only one other Arizona team finished ahead of them while most of the rest of the teams in the Arizona region elected to play in the 18 Club division.

Congratulations to these teams and their coaching staffs on a great tournament.

18-Edge Work Their Way To The Top

The 18 Edge squad firmly planted their flag in the region landscape on March 8th with a second place finish in the Division 1 Open tournament.

Despite losing to a talented Arrowhead 18-Wilson team in the finals, the Edge smacked them down in 2 in pool play and for the second year in a row, have established themselves as a real threat to win the 18-Open division for a second year in a row.

Congratulations Ladies on a terrific job!

Zia Athletes Score Again on Recruiting Front

With the first round of college commitments being counted, Zia again saw many of their athletes take scholarships to further their volleyball and collegiate futures.

Marissa Yoder from the 18-3D accepted a scholarship to play for Lisa Stuck at Glendale Community College.

Rikki Leib, also of the 18-3D accepted a scholarship to Arizona Western College in Yuma while Nichelle Williams will be playing middle at Phoenix College where she will join our 18-Edge outside hitter Nicole Lentine.

Congratulations to all of these girls and their families. Well done ladies!

Zia 18-Edge Top AZ Finisher in Vegas

Zia's 18-Edge squad shook off a rough 2nd day and finished 35th at the 2008 Las Vegas Invitational February 16-18th. The Edge took 35th overall and was the highest finishing Arizona team in the 18 Open Division. Congratulations to Coach Melo and Lund and the girls who did an outstanding job.

Tournament Weekend Bodes Well for Season

Zia's best threw down with the rest and came up with some stellar finishes in the opening weekend to the 2008 volleyball season.

The 18-Edge team took 11th in the ultra competitive 18 Open bracket in the Fiesta Classic held in Tempe. They were the highest finishing team from the West Valley.

The Zia 16-1 Legit took 6th in the Fiesta 16- Club Division losing only two matches the entire tournament. Zia's 18-3D finished their tournament strong and took 18th in the 18-Club division. The 17-Havoc started slow but rallied the final two days to finish 30th overall in the 18-Club division.

At the Cactus Classic down in Tucson, the 15-1's took 5th overall in the talent stacked 16's division, the second highest 15's team finish in the tournament.

The 12-Aces shook off losing their first two matches to win out and take the Golden Barrel Division Championship, 7th overall.

The 14-Eclipse went 6-2 en route to a 9th place finish overall in the 14's division at the Classic. Zia's 13-Serves You Right took down some heavyweights and earned an 18th place finish out of 48 teams. The 14 -2's improved with each match and finished 33rd.

Johnson is W. Valley's top volleyball player

Kelsey Perry
Special for The Republic
Dec. 6, 2007 11:08 AM

The Arizona Republic has named Glendale Cactus' Megan Johnson this year's West Valley Player of the Year in volleyball.

The senior middle blocker had one thing to say upon hearing the news.

Wow!

"It's unexpected and I'm very proud to have this new title," Johnson said, "I'm actually shocked."

Johnson, who signed with the California State University San Bernardino this fall, has already earned All-State Class 4A honors as well as being named West Valley Region Player of the Year.

The news of the latest honor comes as a pleasant to surprise to Johnson's coach, Lindsay Patterson.

"I am very happy for this honor for her because I feel like she is so deserving," Patterson said, "She's worked so hard all four years of high school."

At 6-foot-1, it's Johnson's athleticism that sets her apart on the court, Patterson said.

"I think she's the best middle in the state," Patterson said, "She's very quick and she's extremely smart. She's just athletic all around."

With two years of varsity experience under her belt, Patterson said Johnson really stepped up into a leadership position this season.

"Megan really shined this year. She's probably one of the hardest workers I've ever coached," Patterson said, "She just had fun this year; it just totally showed. She's a wonderful leader on the court. She definitely leads by example."

After verbally committing to Cal State San Bernardino at the end of the summer, Johnson said she focused on having fun this year.

"I just wanted to live my senior year to the fullest," she said, "I felt that if I had the stress of finding a college I wouldn't have as much fun."

Cactus's promising season was cut short after a disappointing loss to Cave Creek Cactus Shadows in the Class 4A Division I state semifinals.

As a senior, Johnson said the loss was heartbreaking.

"That nearly killed me when we lost," she said, "With all the positive things that have happened, it's definitely cushioned the blow."

As for next year, Patterson said the transition to college should be a refreshing one for Johnson, who expressed an eagerness to play on the next level.

"I'm really excited," she said "I like what I see. I'm not nervous about volleyball or school."

Zia Captures Region Open Title !!!

The Zia 18-Alliance behind coach Jami Rolfes and Giovanna Melo shook off the loss of two starters and finished what they started by topping the Club Red 18's team in three sets and winning the 18 Open Championship at ASU on May 12th.

Despite playing without All-State performers Sarah Reaves and Brittany Clark who were competing in the State Track championships, the team hunkered together and, as Rolfes commented, "played like a team" and won Zia's first Open Championship.

The 15-Elite team also had cause to celebrate as they took the silver division title in the 16-Open division, a week after winning the 16's Championship division, with a win over Peoria rival Arrowhead 16-Ravens team to become the #1 15's team in all of Arizona.

Congratulations to all of these atheltes, and all of the athletes and coaches who helped make this season the best in Zia's history.

Zia's 15 Elite Prove It!

Take Championship 16's Title

Zia's 15-Elite team, coached by Kristin Marin and Autumn Baker lived up the the name they gave themselves at the season's beginning by topping the #1 seeded Molten 16's team in the semifanals and then dropping the Az. Storm 15-1s in the final to claim the 16's AAA division Championship at Highland High School on May 5th. Congratulations to Kristin, Autumn and this group of amazing athletes on a dream season.
