Serves You Right Team News and Notes:
Serves-U-Right Reaches the Top Division Of the 14 & Under Club Division
The 13-1 Serves-U-Right team has risen to be the #2 seeded team in the 14 and under Club Division by its outstanding showing the past three tournaments! Here’s how they did it…
On February 16th, the girls were in Division and played like they were ready for Division 1! Our first match was against the East Valley 14 Kelley. The girls played well and defeated East Valley in two games with scores of 25-15 and 25-12.
Our second match of the day was against Shonto Starlings 14’s. Serves-U-Right team stepped up running away with a two game win with scores of 25-12 and 25-21.
Our final match of the day was against the best team we had seen yet in region play; AZ Heat 14-1. This team was an all around good team, they seemed to do everything right. Both games were close, but AZ Heat topped Serves-U-Right with scores of 23-25 and 21-25. With a second place finish for the day at Dysart High School, the girls were ready to move on to Division 1!
On March 1st, the Serves-U-Right team was ready to face off with the top dogs of the 14-Club division. With one team missing, the girls faced a 4 match day. Our first match of the morning was against AZ Storm 13 Thunder. The AZ Storm team had finished first in Division 1 in the previous tournament. The girls did not let that intimidate them, and came out swinging with an impressive win 24-26, 25-15, 15-11 to start the day. Our second match of the day would be against a team that moved up to Division 1 with us, the Shonto Starlings. The girls did not play as well against them as they did in the previous tournament, and had to take this match to 3 games, which scores of 22-25, 25-12, and 15-11. After defeated the Starlings, Serves-U-Right moved on to the AZ Heat 14-1 team. The girls were ready for a re-match. They gave it their all, but once again fell short against this tough team 22-25, 17-25. We still had one more match left for the day, Arrowhead 14-Fire. Both teams seemed to be evenly matched, and the rallies were long-lasting. Once again, Serves-U-Right fell short to the Arrowhead Fire team with scores of 27-29, 26-24, 7-15. After a 2-2 finish, the Serves-U-Right team earned a 3rd place finish for the day, and stayed in Division 1 for the next tournament.
On March 15th, the girls showed up at Buckeye High School, ready to place better than the last tournament. Our first match of the morning would be against AZP 14-Davies. The girls were playing aggressively and as a team, which helped them beat the AZP team 25-16, 25-14. The girls then moved on to AZ Heat 14-1. After 2 losses to this team, the girls were itching to finally beat this team. After losing game 1 with a score of 16-25, the girls had to pick themselves up for game 2. There were up and down moments in game 2, but near the end of the game, the Serves-U-Right team fought hard for every point and turned everything around. They didn’t get down on themselves after mistakes, and got fired up, which changed the momentum of the game in our favor. Game two showed a final score of 25-19. The girls were ready for game 3, so they could finally take this team down. Serves-U-Right took the momentum from game 2 into game 3 and played as a team and the communication on the court was excellent! Game 3 was an exciting game to watch, as the Serves-U-Right team, FINALLY took down AZ Heat with a game 3 score of 15-8!! After such a great win, our final match of the day would be against Arrowhead 14-Fire. Game one was back and forth between the teams, but Serves-U-Right gained the momentum at the end of the game to take game 1, 25-23. Game two was very different. The score was 9-25, and that’s all that needs to be said. Game three showed long rallies and good aggressive play, but the Arrowhead team would come out with the win, 15-11. A second place finish for the day is something the Serves-U-Right team should be very proud of. We stay in Division one, and we are all sure we will see that Arrowhead 14-Fire team again…The third time’s the charm! Our next tournament will be in California… ‘Til April!

Serves U Right celebrates the winning point over AZ Heat.
Region Tournament #1 2/2/08
Serves-U-Right Takes First!
Zia Serves-U-Right had a stellar first place showing at Dysart High School for their first region tournament.
Serves-U-Right began the afternoon against Zona 14-5. Behind Julie’s serving, Zia got a 13-0 jump on the Tucson team. Everyone that played in game 1 earned an ace, which helped Serves-U-Right take game 1, 25-8.
Game two was nothing different. Savannah helped the team with a terrific ace and some saves, and Daniella sealed the deal at game point with a very strategic tip to win the match with a game two score of 25-12.
After resting a match, our second match of the afternoon would be slightly more challenging against Litchfield Park 14-National. Game 1 showed some great serving, which had Litchfield scrambling. Game 1 came and went with a score of 25-7.
Game 2 showed a more aggressive Litchfield Park team. Courtney ran the court with ease and had some very crucial serve/receive passes that were straight to Julie. Julie had some awesome saves and really stepped up her game by calling everything and talking to her teammates. An amazing team effort led to a winning score of 25-19. This would lead Serves-U-Right to the first place match.
Our final match of the day would be against a team we had previously defeated in Tucson. AVA 13-Mizuno had tall girls and scrappy defense. Megan and Mariah had great serve/receive passes that helped our setters feel confident in their passers. Krista’s sets were spot on, not to mention her scrappy defense. Krista’s confident play helped lead her team to a game one win of 25-18.
Game two was a stellar showing with the aggressive defense by Kelsey. She was all over the court and placed the ball very well when she was in the front row. As always, Candice, “The Bullet”, had some powerful serves and great defense, which was a key factor in game 2. Jessica came into the back row with confidence and had some great serves, and perfect passes. The match was clinched with a kill by Emily, who had been swinging all day long. Not to mention, she was all over the court in the back row. Game 2 showed a score of 25-21 and the first place finish was sealed.
Congrats Serves-U-Right! ‘Til next time!
Serves-U-Right season off to a great start…!

Zia Serves-U-Right had an impressive showing in Tucson at the Cactus Classic this weekend. Placing 18th out of a whopping 48 teams in the 14’s Division, Zia Serves-U-Right (the 5th highest placing 13’s team) played with heart and intensity throughout the weekend.
Saturday morning started at Amphi High School, with our first match against a competitive AVA 13-Mizuno team. After the girls got rid of their first game jitters, and got a hold of the rotation, they pulled it together to win game 1, 25-17. Game 2 was an even more impressive showing, behind Kelsey’s serving with a 25-7 win over AVA.
Our next match of the morning was against a very scrappy East Valley 14 Jill team. Each play was exciting to watch as both teams were laying it all out on the court to fight for every point. After a long game 1, East Valley came out on top with a 27-25 win. Serves-U-Right would not let a loss get to them. The close game made them come out with even more intensity in game 2 with a 25-17 win, which would lead to a deciding game 3. Serves-U-Right came into game 3 with tough serves and great defense. We had a great jump start in the game, which helped us win the match with a game 3 score of 15-6.
After a great morning of wins, the Serves-U-Right team was ready for a challenge. Our final match of the morning would be against a very talented, tall, and scrappy AZ Desert Sky 14-1 team. The girls surprised everyone with their heart and intensity in game 1! It was neck and neck the whole way, and they fought hard for every single point! AZ Desert Sky was able to squeeze out the game 1 win with a score of 26-24. After such a tiring first game, the girls gave it their all in game 2, but fell short with a score of 14-25.
After a great morning and a second place finish, the Zia Serves-U-Right team was off to Ironwood Ridge High School…
The girls showed up to the new gym being very behind after a long morning, and had to jump right on the court for the first afternoon match against Arrowhead 14-Outkast. Game one showed a very tired Serves-U-Right team with a losing score of 14-25. Game two was no exception, with a disappointing loss of 9-25.
The Serves-U-Right team realized they did not like losing, and quickly got some rest and food, to store some energy to play AZ Grand Canyon Juniors 14-1. They wanted to end the day with a winning record and they came out with intensity in game one with a score of 25-21. Serves-U-Right showed no mercy in game 2, and was eager to get out of the gym to go to dinner instead of staying to ref. They pounced on AZGCJ with a game 2 score of 25-15.
After a filling dinner, the Zia Serves-U-Right team would face the Golden Barrel division in the morning, which is the highest finish ever by a team that Doug and Bekah have coached.
The Golden Barrel division took us back to Amphi High School. Our first match of the morning was against another tall and talented AZ Storm 14-Lightning team. The girls fought hard for every point and pushed a game one win with a score of 25-23. Game two was a different story. The girls’ communication shut down and there was zero energy on the court, which lead to a game 2 loss with a score of 9-25. Serves-U-Right came back in game 3 with intensity, but fell short in a 15-10 loss against AZ Storm.
Our last match of the day would be against AZVC 14-Rachel. This game would end up going to 3 and every point was fun to watch as the girls were hitting the floor for every ball. The front row was taking swings, and the back row was digging balls. This resulted in a game one win of 25-19. Game two was nothing different. They again fought for every point, and the teams were so evenly matched that Zia fell short in game 2 with a score of 20-25. Again, game 3 was the same. The score went back and forth and both teams were playing their hearts out. Zia did lose game 3 with a score of _15-13 and an 18th place finish for the tournament.
Doug and Bekah are very proud of each girl for the effort and improvement over the weekend…

Krista our captain and setter above sends over a freeball. She proved herself this weekend with smart choices on her setting, great hits, and powerful serves. It’s very rare to find such an all-around player that can do everything at such a young age. Her leadership was wonderful and she always had something positive or funny to say.
Courtney impressed both coaches with some very powerful serves this weekend. She was constantly talking on the court and made the other girls on the court feel confident with the rotation. She as well made smart decisions and was true leader this weekend; something a setter should always be!
Julie was amazing. She can do it all. She is another setter and was all over the court. She was irreplaceable this weekend and had more kills than anybody on the team, and that never happens for a setter. She also backed it up with a lot of assists and aces. She could put the ball wherever a coach would tell her and she kept a smile the whole weekend.
Daniella improved a lot this weekend. She did a great job at picking up the short balls in the front row. She also used her hands a lot to get those tips and was very smart about it. If she can improve this much in one weekend, just wait until the end of the season!
Megan had some great serve/receive passes this weekend. The coaches feel very confident putting her in the back row. She has perfect passing form and the other girls can count on her to get the ball to the setter. She is also a great down ref… little bit of an inside joke.
Mariah was a wonderful surprise this weekend! She didn’t start the first couple of matches, but she proved herself and started every match after that. Her serve/receive passes were perfect and she was getting to balls that other girls couldn’t have. Not only was she digging balls left and right, her serves were fantastic! Great job Mariah!
Emily was very dependable this weekend, which is a true characteristic of a captain. She took a lot of swings and had great passes. She was an all-around player and one of the best hitters of the weekend. Not to mention… she’s kind of funny…and superstitious.
Candace was another dependable player this weekend. We all had a sigh of relief when we saw Candace was going back to serve. She has a killer floater serve that is very hard to return. She had great serve/receive passes and digs, and has the bruise to show for it!
Savannah is a bundle of energy. She kept the team and coaches laughing the whole weekend. She had some great saves this weekend and her passing form is improving every practice.
Jessica had some great serve/receive passing this weekend! Not to mention, some great serves! She has great passing form and always got it right to her target. She is also able to use her hands in the back row, which is a great quality to have!

And finally…Kelsey above passing a serve! Kelsey was our MVP of the weekend. Kelsey is able to zone in on the court and lets nothing on the outside distract her. She was all over the court, doing everything. She had unstoppable serves, amazing digs, and great serve/receive passing. She was amazing in the front row. She could find the open spots on the court and place the ball there, and she was always pushing herself to play better and better. Kelsey will definitely be a stand out player this season.
Great job Serves-U-Right! Thank you parents for the support you gave your girls, and we’re looking forward to next tournament!
