Holy Shnikees!
By: Lynzy Rigby
What a weekend. First off lets just say my team is officially some of the funniest people I have ever met. We had been waiting and preparing ourselves for this trip to come. Vegas was a long weekend for team Havoc. We were all eager to get there and have a life experience of memories ahead of us. On Friday night when we all arrived at this “spectacular” hotel, we went out to Applebee’s to grub before we played our little hearts out the next morning. It was a good night to team bond before our early morning that was rapidly approaching before us. We had some good talks, a great ET impression, a lovely time shaking the bus.
Saturday morning approached very early. Team Havoc was ready and fired up to get some wins, but unfortunately things got away from us. It was a rough say with all losses, but we shook it off and went out and enjoyed out self’s that night. We had a tasty meal at Dick's that night, where we were aloud to express ourselves in a abnormal manner. The girls had a blast, with our amazing hats that we received. After dinner we took a stroll on the town were the girls were able to shop and enjoy the Vegas scene. I would have to say that I have never laughed so hard in a van with these girls. It was approaching 9:15 and two of our teammates got lost. It was a tragic event, but one that we will not forget. We headed back to the hotel that night for an early sleep, to prepare for a victory the next morning.
The next morning waking up bright and early we were off to a better start. Still not winning or anything but playing much better. We finished up day two with a victory at last! Our first win in Vegas against the Maryland Juniors. That night all the girls went their separate ways to spend some "quality parent time". It was a early night for the girls though in bed by 10:15, with another early morning ahead of team Havoc.
Monday was a great day for team Havoc. Winning two out of three matches and really playing like a team. We all learned a new game called “SIGNS” which really brought some positive energy on and off the court. The last game was a sad loss but the girls fought back well. And almost literally fought the other team, so rude! It was a great weekend and another great learning experience for the team!
Vegas Baby
By Olivia Thompson
This past weekend, February 15th – 18th, Havoc experienced all of the wild wonders of Las Vegas. Two words come to mind looking back on the fun and amusing trip “Vegas Baby.” Friday night after the team finally reached their destination the team went out to enjoy a wonderful meal at Applebee’s. Between talking about boyfriends and looking like ET, everyone strangely seemed to bond.
The next morning after a good nights rest Havoc was ready to kick butt. Even though the team didn’t exactly end up kicking butt everyone still worked as a team and didn’t give up through the day. After playing some fun volleyball Havoc was ready for a spectacular and adventurous night out on the strip. Unfortunately, not being as prepared as they thought, they went out to eat at Dicks Restaurant. The team loved the place so much that most of the girls walked out of the restaurant screaming, and this was only the beginning. After walking around the Venetian enjoying the shops and breathtaking scenery, the team patiently waited in the van while two of their teammates somehow got very lost almost on their way to Salt Lake City. After feeling astray, for after about an hour, the team reunited and was finally on their way back to the hotel.
Then on Sunday morning Havoc lost two games feeling very disappointed and scared of repeating the day before. Overcoming their fears Havoc fought through their last match of the day taking it to three games. That night the team got to spend some time with the parents.
On Monday morning Havoc finally decided to come together and find a solution to all of their losses. Then a team member, also an amazing leader and a student council member, named Allison Culley had a genius idea. The team ended up playing a game that got everyone pumped up and having fun. Bringing this positive energy on to the court Havoc beat the first team in two games and kicking butt in the second game as well. The team ended up losing the last match of the tournament but still pushed themselves at the end of the second match. Wanting to meet number 12, from the opponent’s team, outside in the parking lot the team restrained and played their hardest losing the second match by two points.
Then it was time for Havoc to go their separate ways back to the AZ. The trip was fun and a great experience, but sympathy goes out to the teams fathering Coach Eric, who must have felt trapped in a CORNNER, being surrounded by a bunch of girls for three days straight. This trip being overall a growing experience for the team has prepared Havoc for many victories to come.
Havoc Resurrects itself at First Open Tourney
by Jenna Brownlee
Havoc started off there first open tournemant a little shakey but after loosing to AJ's 16-1's and East Valley Juniors 16-1's they came alive. The first game the girls were definetely asleep, and the second, well there was just lack of something. But we came back to beat East Valley Juniors 18's in three.
After taking 3rd in there pool we won our next two games in our cross-pool. Beating Azvc 18-2's and team Dynamo 18-1's. The Dynamo game brought the best out in the team. All the girls came together and played as a team fighting for every point. Team Havoc finally did what they had been trying to do all day... Execute!
This weekend was a learning expeirence for the whole team. We figured out each others stengths and weaknesses , and what each of us could take. We all come from different schools and well grew up differently and we really learned what we had to do for each other. This tournement definetely brought our team together. It showed us all that not everyone is like you and can do what you can do. Some are strong mentally and some are strong physically and we have to help each other to better our team as a whole. Great weekend ladies! Lookin foward to Vegas!!
Not a Fiesta, but a Coming Out Party For Sure!
The Havoc earned their nickname over the MLK weekend with some up and down play that culminated in one of the best matches you’ll see all year and a respectable 30 place finish at the Fiesta Classic at Camelback High School January 19-21st.
The tournament started roughly for the team. With seeding a mystery, and trying to find their mojo, the Havoc posted a rough first day, losing to Northern Nevada’s 17-1’s team out of the gate, the only 17’s team we would play all tournament. We played the AVA 18-Baden team tough and won our first match of the tournament, a 25-23, 19-25, 15-11 effort. We followed that with a loss to the Quest 18-Aric squad from California. Starting off a tournament 1-2 could be worse, but credit goes to the girls who maybe saw flashes of what they thought this team could be. They didn’t get down, on themselves or each other, and went home that night ready to tackle the field on Sunday.
We started off with the Rancho Valley 18-3’s team from California. The Havoc played better, losing at 19 and 22, but there was sense that they had turned the corner, and the corner came in the next match with Scottsdale’s SEVC’s 18’s losing the first match at 18, the team rallied. They remembered they were a team and not 6 individuals and lo and behold, they smacked down the green 25-18. Having given up leads the whole tournament, they again became steadfast not to let it happen again. They gave up the first three points, but then went on a 15-4 run to win their first match of the tournament, in a come from behind fashion.
Next up was a team who had, in this young season, owned us. Our Zia 18-3D team who we had scrimmaged twice and honestly never been close to. But this new found attitude on the court was contagious. No one felt they were out of a point, a game or a match. Despite losing the first set at 20, the Havoc again rallied strong and gave the 3D a loss at 20 setting up another 3rd game. And again, despite giving up 3 of the first 4 points, some solid serving and some stellar defense led us to win number 2, 15-9.
The team went home much more content that this was the team they were going to be. They came back Monday afternoon at noon to play a tough High Altitude 18-1’s team from Flagstaff. In game one, we were flat and seemingly tired. We got whooped. Game two, we fell behind 18-12 and it looked dim, but again, the Havoc light bulb flickered. A couple of great serves, a block here, a kill there, a monster dig and suddenly the match was even at 1 set each. Game three was a blast, and win or lose; it’s WHY we play this game. They came out and got up on us 9-3. But we again came back. We felt the scorekeepers had missed a point and as we fought our way back to 11 all, we felt we were ahead by one. Back and forth we went with our friends from Flag. Serving at 14-13, we got a swing on the outside that sailed long, but after the jubilation on one side and the disappointment on the other subsided, the down ref had called a touch. We got our point back, but now had to earn the rest. When the smoke cleared, it was 18-16 Havoc on top of a great, great match that sent the team into a frenzy. Now after dropping three of our first four matches of the tournament, we had won our last 3.
We headed up against the Az. Sky 18-Black squad. This time, we were aggressive from the outset. We were nip and tuck the whole first game, but we made fewer errors down the stretch, and we eked out a win at 23. The next game was the team that had found itself. Serving aggressively, passing brilliantly, covering and moving on defense, talking loud and with, not at, each other. We pasted them 25-17 and headed into the 18-Club Flight bracket final against the Arrowhead 18-Element.
Michelle and I noticed the girls getting fatigued at the end of the last match even though we had won, but playing our third match in 4 hours took its toll. Not to take anything away from the Arrowhead team who played hard and inspired. We lost game one at 21, and despite being behind most of game two, tied it at 21. We volleyed back and forth, but we led 24-23 and serving. That was one of those moments that the team will remember. We lost that point, and the match 25-27. When you get those chances, you have to take advantage.
That was just one of about 100 things they Havoc learned about themselves this weekend. The setters hard work showed on the court with each match. The middles got better and our blocks became more formidable with every ball. Our outsides and right sides seemed to swing smarter and harder as the weekend went on. We won 4 our our last 5 matches including 4 in a row. In short, the Havoc learned much in 3 days, about the speed of this division, the power of this age group, and mostly about each other.
Special thanks to Michelle for covering for the weary traveler.
