Zia Queen Creek Cyclones

ZiaQC v. Primitive 25-14, 24-21 Zia QC v. Zia Surprise 25-15; 25-20 Zia QC v. Zona 25-21; 25-21   The girls did an amazing job this weekend. This was the first tournament we held all of our opponents to two games per match and that meant the girls had more energy in the end.  We only missed 19 serves all day, which is an amazing improvement. The girls worked very hard the past two weeks and learned what it takes to get first in a tournament. Thank you to all of the parents for their continued support of the team and always providing food and even Pizza, yes they do have a Pizza Hut in Buckeye. Also, thank you to Tawyna, Zia Surprise coach and her assistant for warming the Cyclones up for the first match as I was stuck in traffic and behind two major accidents and got to the gym in enough time to give my line-up. That is what Zia is all about. Helping each other out in times of need. Zia is an amazing family and I am thankful for expanding Zia all the way to the QC.   About the girls in the tournament:   Kristy - anchored our back row. She was everywhere and never let a ball hit the ground.   Katie - was solid in her all around play. She distributed the ball to our hitters and put up great serves and aces.   Megan - dominated in serving. Even with her new technique of grunting (she says it's because of softball) frightened the other team.   Mary - dominted the front row. She blocked almost every ball that came to the net and the other teams were getting nervous to hit against Mary.   Anna - played a great all around game. Her serves were deadly and hits were timely.   Rachael - distributed the ball extremely well to our hitters.   Kat - did an amazing job at the net along with her defense. She hit the ground and got some hits up and even blocked a couple at the net.   Shannon - played great in the front row. She altered the opponents hits and soft blocked.   Until next time...

The Cyclones have started off to a great season so far. They got first fourth in their first tournament, dipped a little on their second tournament and got 7th, but after two hard weeks of practice, regained their confidence back and got second place in the last tournament. The girls are playing well together and have come a long way. We have only been practicing since the beginning of January and there are big improvements with everyone...

The Cyclones started off the 2008 region season ranked 31st and ended 4th in our division. The girls were ready to show their families what they have done this past month during practices.

We started off by playing the Sedona 16’s team. This was the first club tournament for majority of the team and it was also the first match ever for one of girls. The match started off a little slow with little communication on the court. After a couple of time outs, the girls pulled together and won in two games, 25-20 and 26-25. This win was special because it was our first match together as the Cyclones.

Our next match would be against our own Zia 16-2’s. Since the Cyclones are in the East Valley, we have not seen any of our Zia teams, so we did not know what to expect other than a tough fought game. The Cyclones came out with intensity but after some mental mistakes were not able to pull it back together and lost in two games, 13-25 and 13-25. The Cyclones had great defense and hung with the Zia 16-2’s but it wasn’t enough for a victory.

The last match would be against AZ Mile High for third place. The scores were 25-20, 23-25 and 18-16.  These scores show that it was a very tough and close match. We had some amazing hits, defense, rallies and serves, but could not hang on to our lead in the third game. This was the best game of the day as the Cyclones were starting to look like a team.

I am so proud of the Cyclones. We only had 8 practices so far and they have all improved so much. They are all eager to learn and are all word workers in practice. Thanks to all of the parents who came to the tournament in Prescott and providing the great snacks. Our next tournament is February 16th, so stay tuned…

Until next time…

A little bit about the girls from the first tournament.

#1 Kristy – Libero

Kristy dominated the back row like she owned it. She went for every ball and never gave up on the play. She was scrappy and as a libero myself, I loved see her dig the balls that the other side thought were down. Throughout the day, she was reading the hitters and put herself in the best position possible for defense. Great Job Kristy.

# 3 Katie – Setter

Katie ran our offense without a hit. Not only was she on with her sets, but she was serving bullets. We even got her to yell a little bit on the court. Her defense was great and was able to keep the ball alive. Keep it up Katie.

#4 Meagan – Middle Blocker

Meagan dominated the net and pumped her team up while she was on the court and off the court. She came up with some crucial hits and serves. When the team was down, she pulled them together and was a great example of being a leader. Keep it up Meagan.

#5 Mary – Middle Blocker

This was the first time Mary has played in a game and she did great. She has only had 16 hours of practice and looked good out on the court. By the third match, she was blocking, hitting, and got two serves over. She is so eager and willing to learn about the game. Great job, Mary.

#10 Anna – Outside Hitter

When Anna’s brother in law told me early Saturday morning that Anna thought she was playing soccer, I have to admit, I was a little nervous…lol However, she was on fire throughout the day. Her serves were unstoppable along with her hits. She was solid in her serve receive and defense. Keep it up Anna, and remember, you are playing volleyball and not soccer.

#15 Rachael – Setter

Rachael’s serves were also unstoppable from the other side. She has a tough floater serve and used it to her advantage. She distributed the ball well to our hitters and came up with some timely kills as well. Great job Rachel.

#18 Kat – Outside Hitter

Kat’s determination and dedication to improve her serving was impressive. She gave everyone chills when she got them over back to back while the game was close. She was solid during serve receive and her defense was great. The kills were right in the holes on the other side and that excitement helped the team. Keep it up Kat.

#21 Shannon – Rightside/Outside Hitter

Shannon has never played rightside before and she did a great job adapting to the new responsibilities. She took the second ball when our setters called helped or took the first ball over. She had some timely kills and had some great serves. Great tournament, Shannon. Keep it up.
