 2009 ZVL Champions Crowned!!!

It started under the swelter of a typical 108 degree July 5:30 when the 16's, 17's and 18's rolled in and ended under the stars at 11:30 with the 12's and 14's finishing up the most successful ZVL season ever!

The Team of the Year goes to the 1402 Peccaries, Julie Shaw and Kelsy Touvell who went through the regular season unscathed and followed that undefeated season by not dropping a game en route to a 21-16, 21-10 victory over the 1401Crush team of Holli Beenau and Tristyn Smith-Sommers who had an outstanding season as well, going 12-1 in the regular season and only losing to the Peccaries.

Team 1801, the Muscles showed theirs with an impressive run in the 17/18's division. Cassie Gray and Tayler Bell flexed their way to the title not dropping a game along the way despite being the #2 seed in the bracket. They defeated the 1802 Rockstars Rebecca Valdez and Lacee Depue 21-18, 21-15 for the title.

On the 16's side, it was drama a plenty. The 1602 Short Scrappers, Brittani Troth and Sam Parker were seeded 4th out of 10 teams and won their first match, topped the #1 seeded team, 1605 in their second match and went into the semifinals on a roll where they met up with the 1607 Millennium Falcons , Anna Caballero and Rhiannon Polak. The Scrappers topped them in the semifinals sending the Falcons to the loser's bracket where the fought their way back for a second chance against the Scrap. The Falcons prevailed 23-21, 21-18 sending the Scrappers into the loser's bracket and a one-game-for-it-all scenario. Tied at 14 all and at 17 all, the Short Scrappers fought the Falcons off, taking the 16's title 21-17.

The 12's division was settled way past their bedtimes. The 1205 Fluid Az. team of Jenna Tunnell and Ellie Padilla-Townsend won their first two matches and ran into the1206 Fury duo of Asha Hart and Rachel Mortensen. The Fluid dropped the Fury into the loser's bracket where again, they came back up and forced a rematch in the finals. A nail biter of a match that was very well played on both sides was a 22-20, 21-18 triumph for the Fluid Az. pair and they were crowned at 11:30 p.m. ending the ZVL's 2009 offering.
