Season Update February 18, 2010

The Zia 14 Rave has had an incredibly busy February starting with a second place finish in their second Championship tournament held at ASU on February 6th. They roughed up the AZVC 16 Ohana in straight sets then topped the Az. Saguaros 17's before dropping the final to Arizona Juniors 15-1's

The next weekend saw the team in the President's Day Tournament held at Marc T. Atkinson gym in Maryvale on February 13-14th. The 13th saw the Rave at less than their best. They topped the Tempe VOS 14's team 25-19, 25-21 before dropping a tough 3 setter to the Fluid 15-1's team, 25-20, 19-25, 15-17. We followed that up by getting trounced by the tournament's number 1 seed, the Club Red 15 Red team who won 17-25, 16-25. We ended the first day 1-2 and headed to the lower dozen for pool and bracket play on Sunday.

But Valentine's Sunday went a bit better for the team. We topped the Az. Sky 16R2 team in straight sets as we sorted through our demons. With the help of Assistant Coach Ruiz, the team prevailed 25-22, 25-23. We played the Surprise Volleyball Academy 16 Wahines and popped them 25-14, 25-9 and headed into bracket play winning our pool. We played the Az Desert Sky 16 Aztecs in the semi final and overcame a little blip here and there to take the three setter, 25-18, 21-25, 15-8. Last up was the Zia 15-Havoc team who we have scrimmaged already twice this season. In a very tight match with momentum changes going back and forth, the Rave came out ahead in a close 25-21, 25-23 tilt, despite being behind in both sets.

Congrats to Holli for garnering an All-Tournament nod from the other coaches and further props to Chlesea, Anysse and Tristyn for getting votes from the other coaches.

Our next tournament is Saturday at ASU. The work continues....

Season Update January 23, 2010

The Zia 14 Rave put an exclamation point on their busiest three weeks of the young season with a solid showing and a third place finish at their first Arizona Region Championship Division tournament held at Buckeye High School on January 23rd.

The team put together a good day, topping the Central Phoenix 18-Naka squad in straight sets. They took on the AZVC 16 Travel Robbie but came up just short, trading blowout sets and having to settle for a 13-15 loss in the third. Needing a win to move up a division, the team came alive and topped the Players 16 Black squad in straight sets to earn a trip to Division 13 at our next Region tournament on February 6th.

The weekend before, the team had a successful weekend at the Fiesta Classic. Playing up into a 16’s tournament, the girls became more acquainted with the speed and power they’ll see in the years to come, but forced them to reckon with now. The team dropped a close match to the Northern AZ Jr.s 16-1’s on Saturday, January 17th but upset the Shenu 16 Shardai team 17-15 in the third. The Rave played a valiant set against the Arrowhead 14 Rage team before fading in the second set.

Sunday saw the team again play hard, dropping a tough match to the EVJ 15-1’s, topping the Fluid 15-1’s team and playing their best match of the season in a close loss to the Santa Monica Beach Club’s 16 Mo squad.

The girl’s came back to Kingdom Courts Monday and dropped a tough three setter to the Az. Sky 15N2 team but our tournament goal had been realized. The girls started 64th out of 66 teams and finished the tournament 54th, moving up 10 spots in a SIXTEEN’S TOURNAMENT! The girl’s improvement in those three days was an obvious precursor to their success at their first Region tilt.

The weekend before that, the team put it’s first foot on the court playing in the Kingdom Courts Friendship Tournament. Again, playing in a 15/16’s tournament the girls saw what was expected of them and began their work toward that higher level, adding a three set upset of the Az. Sky 15N team along the way!

With these 14 matches, the girls have already played more than they will probably on their High School Freshman or JV teams in just these three weeks! But their improvement is undeniable.

Tanner has been amazing filling in where needed and the team is responsive and respective of her efforts. She is to be thanked and congratulated.

While the season is just shy of 3 months in, there is much more to do. But if the work ethic and improvement continues, there is no limit to what the Rave can accomplish.
