Arizona Region Tournament #2
The second Region tournament saw the Crush come out on a mission. The mission was to play well enough to move up a division in the next Region tournament. The first match of the day saw the Crush take on Anthem 13’s. With outstanding serving, including numerous “Silver Bullet Ace’s, the Crush made quick work of Anthem, winning in 2 games. Up next was the Phoenix Joy’s 14-Green team. The Crush started quick, winning the first game 25-19, behind great serving and serve reception. The second game saw the Crush lose a close one 21-25. Crush displayed MTXE in the third game to win their first three game match of the year 15-10.
Although the mission
was accomplished, the Crush wanted more. They wanted to finish first.
A tough West Valley 14-Fury stood in the way. The outstanding serving
game vanished against West Valley. The Crush relied on its serve
reception, defense and offense to win a very exciting match 25-20
and 25-23. Tournament highlights included Shelby and Makaela’s
serving and Ashley and Katie’s serve reception.

Cactus Classic – A Successful Debut for Zia Crush
Players, coaches
and parents had a blast staying in a Hotel and playing
some
great volleyball. In Saturday’s morning’s pool play the
Crush finished second by winning an exciting match against AZ Sky
13 Black Ice and losing two very competitive three game matches to
AZ Thunder 14-2 and SEVC 14. With a second place finish in the morning
pool we earned the privilege of playing two very good 14 teams, AZ
Sky White Fire and Zia’s own 14-Eric in the afternoon pool.
Talk about SHOCK AND AWE! Sunday morning saw us competing for the
Cholla Division Championship. As fate would have it, we were matched
up with AZ Thunder 14-2‘s in the first match. We lost in another
competitive three game match. Next up was a two game loss to PNV’s
14-1 team. Crush finished out the Cactus Classic on a high note with
a two game victory over
Sunspots
14 Nationals to finish 7th in the Cholla Division and 23rd overall.
Congratulations to all Crush players for playing their best and cheering
on their teammates. Tournament highlights were the serving of Katelin,
Ashley, Audrey, Shelby and Makaela. Thanks go out to the loudest
cheering parents in the tournament for supporting the players and
coaches. Thanks also to Kim, Diana, Julie and Elise for being room
moms.
Arizona Region Tournament #1
The first Region
tournament saw the Crush heading back to Tucson. “Tucson
again” moaned
the parents and coaches. Yes, Tucson again, and oh by the way, we
have the morning pool. 8:00 am start, have your kids there by 7:00!
In the first match our opponent, Gila Valley, played very well, making
very few mistakes through the entire match, wining the match in 3
games. Our second match of the day against Zona’s 14-4 team
saw the Crush come out strong and committed, taking the match in
two games. The day’s third match saw us playing the Club West
Suns. Club West flat outplayed the Crush, winning in two games. Tournament
highlights included Morgan, Shelby, Stephanie, Katelin and Makaela’s
serving and Breana, Ashley and Katie’s serve reception.

Well Zia – Doug is off and running. We have had 7 practices so far and the girls are showing off their skills and enthusiam for the game of volleyball. The team is working hard at eliminating campfires and brain outs, while increasing MTXE. The team is made up of girls from Frontier, Paseo Verde, Oakwood, Zuni Hills, Hillcrest, and Apache elementary schools.
We started with 31 suggestions for a team name. After the first round of voting, name choices were narrowed down to Hot Shots, Crush and Blue Turtles. CRUSH won out. You probably heard the collective sigh of relief across the Valley from the coaches and parents when Blue Turtles was eliminated as a team name. GO ZIA CRUSH!
A warm welcome goes out to Elise Wright, our assistant coach. Elise played for Zia and Centennial High School. A Happy Birthday song, well wishes and cupcakes went out to Breana this past week. Look out Mom and Dad, she ’s a teenager now.
Defintions:
Campfire - when a ball drops in the middle of the floor with all of the defensive players looking at it.
Brain outs - what individuals do at anytime, that cause them to forget the sport and its objectives and instead either play kindergarten ball, dodge ball or enter the twilight zone.
MTXE – mental toughness and eXtra effort
