From the Region Commissioner- HELP!!!
While we get a lot of communication from the region office
and the Commissioner of the Arizona Region, Harold Cranswick.
Most of it is Region issues and procedures, but this one affects
all of us, and the sport we all enjoy so much. To that end, we
are anxious to share this one with our club.
This has been a problem for several seasons, but this year
it has been nearly uncontrollable! As you will read, some of
the behavior by the Region Parents has bordered on the criminal!
While we have had no instances of this type of behavior from
any Zia parents, we want to make everyone aware; Parents, athletes,
coaches and fans alike, that this kind of behavior will not be
tolerated.
Thank You for being the best Volleyball Parents in Arizona.
All of us here at Zia appreciate you and your efforts.
Thanks

Arizona Region Subject: Message to Club Directors
Club Directors: You
are invited!
This is an invitation to continue to be
a part of the Arizona Region for many years to come. You do
not need to RSVP but you do need to respond in a different way. For
starters, you are invited to read a excellent article written by
the Arizona Region Junior Division Coordinator, Jonathan Norris,
in the latest edition of the Arizona Region Newsletter and to further
reinforce some of the same concepts, I would like to encourage you
to read a recent Volleyball Magazine article written by former Olympian,
Pat Powers. Pat's article can be found at http://www.volleyballmag.com/archive/2007/crossingtheline.php.
The
reason for this invitation is an effort by the Arizona Region to
begin to address a very important problem that is confronting our
Region. Over the course of the last few years, our players,
officials, and Site Directors have found themselves dealing with
an increasing number of issues resulting from the incredibly poor
behavior of some coaches, players and many spectators, particularly
relatives of the players on court.
Some of the rude
behavior exhibited by these individuals includes:
-
Spectators
who refuse to follow the guidelines and rules set forth by
the owners of the facility, the Region, and/or the Site Director
(e.g., "What
do you mean I can't park my car here?")
-
Spectators
who seem to think that the rules do not apply to them (e.g., "Why
can't I bring in my cup of coffee? I paid for my daughter
to play. I'm entitled.")
-
Coaches and spectators
who continually yell at the players who are officiating (e.g., "Score,
score, score. They just scored a point.")
-
Spectators who sit behind the end lines
and verbally harass the player from the opposing team that
comes back to serve - done in a low enough voice for the
server to hear but not the official on court or many other
surrounding spectators
-
Spectators
who intentionally seek to distract the players on court (e.g.,
A prime example is the group that will unmercifully ring cow
bells during the match and, to add to their poor sportsmanship,
use profanity or obscene gestures when the official and/or site
director asks them to stop.)
-
Coaches
who allow players to trash talk before, during and after the
matches
-
A
myriad of other issues that are all related to an assumed entitlement
to behave in a socially unacceptable fashion by the individuals
To
date, the Region has attempted to deal with these issues quietly
and on a case-by-case basis. Unfortunately, we are finding
that the players, coaches parents and spectators are not showing
much of a willingness to alter their behavior. The sad
fact is that after every tournament the Arizona Region Office
is receiving notifications regarding still more instances of
the same bad sportsmanship.
As
a result, the Arizona Region has decided that our first step
in getting a handle on this will be to reach out to the Club
Directors because there is no faster and more direct connection
to the individuals who are hurting our sport. We need each
of you to understand the seriousness of this situation. This
is not about a few individuals we need you to help control. This
is about our Region losing gym sites and, perhaps more importantly,
having our players believe that the behavior exhibited by the
adults is perfectly acceptable. The
fact is we, as a Region, have too much to lose to allow this
to continue.
Sadly,
the Region has already lost several gym sites because of this
type of behavior and the loss is permanent. School officials
have told us that they have no desire to deal with parents, coaches
and players who behave like this. The schools won't lose
a thing - we will. As a result, all teams can expect
to travel more in the future. Our Office has to take gyms
wherever we can find them and the more gym sites we lose, the
more everyone will be forced to travel or we will have to make
other larger, more significant changes to the structure of the
Region.
Consequently, the
Region is asking each of the Club Directors to educate their
coaches, players and parents about proper behavior at Region
events. If our Officials, officiating teams and Site Directors
continue to have problems there is no question that the Junior
Board and the Executive Boards will take stronger action. Soon
the Arizona Region will have written policies in place that will
impose serious penalties on either the individual, the team and/or
the club as a whole. Neither
Board has a desire to penalize anyone but this type of unsportsmanlike
behavior and general lack of common courtesy has gone on long
enough and we intend to stop it before any further damage is
done to the Region and the Region's ability to offer organized
events for all of our players, both juniors and adults.
Again,
your ability to continue to participate in the Arizona Region
may very well depend on the success of this effort. Please,
please schedule regular meetings for both your coaches and your
parents and instruct them in what is acceptable and what is unacceptable
behavior. The
payoff is a better environment for everyone and the continuation
of many years worth of volleyball experiences for our players. If
you have any questions and/or suggestions please contact the
Arizona Region Office.

Tis the

For information on camps and clinics at
a national and local level, go to the camp link on the Zia website.
Most of the brochures can be printed off these links. While we
don’t recommend
any one camp over another, we encourage you to print out the different
brochures to help make the best choices for you.
When looking at camps, some good questions to ask or things to
look for would be:
- How many touches on the ball will my athlete be getting? If
you are in a camp with 40 kids on a court, figure the touches
will be very limited. Players learn the game by playing and getting
touches. One touch every three minutes is probably not a good
investment.
- What are they teaching? Some camps teach just basics while
others, especially college camps, tend to teach the same techniques
they do their own players.
- Is the camp drill driven or play driven? Some camps are drill
after drill after drill. For some athletes, this is fine. For
some, they want to play.
- Does it fit your budget, your timeline, vacation plans, etc?
- Who is the coach, or lead coaches? Because
a coach is listed doesn’t necessarily mean (s)he is going
to be working with your athlete.
- If you are interested in attending a
certain college in the future, it is a great idea to go to
their camp. It’s a
great way to get seen by their coach, learn the campus, talk
to the athletes, etc.
