Help Us Help You!!!

We here at Zia are always trying to improve our Club for you and your athletes. To that end, we are offering you our end of season Parent Survey. We’d like you to take a second and fill this out. We’d prefer that a parent AND an athlete fill this out.

We want to make sure you are happy with Zia and to that end, we’d like you to rate our Coaches, organization, staff, etc. We understand you may not be happy with certain things and very pleased with others. This is how we, as a Club, identify problems and solve them and at the same time, continue with what is working well. That is why your feedback is so crucial to us. We are one of the only clubs in Arizona that ask for YOUR input.

Click here to take the survey.

Zia’s State of the Union

Another season is over for our athletes. We had some outstanding performances and milestones this season we’d like to recognize:

  • Our 18-Raymond team, coached by Raymond Jajola and Joe Lewis started out the season as the 27 th ranked 18’s team in the Club 18 division, but worked their way to the #6 position before regionals. Great work ladies and gentlemen.
  • The 13-Barracuda’s, coached by Doug Rhoades and Bekah Hiller started as the 33 rd team in the 14’s division and wound up finishing 20th overall in the 14’s Regional championships, the #5 ranked 13’s team in Arizona.
  • The 14-Annihilators started the season ranked 14th and finished the season with an impressive 5th place finish. They add to that an impressive 23rd place finish in the Southern California Qualifier and a 4th place at the Cactus Classic.
  • Congrats go out to Head Coach Tera Bahl, assistant Lisa Doremus and the 15-Shock who had to overcome some serious mid-season drama. Despite starting the season ranked 14th, they finished Regionals as the #8 16’s team in Arizona, and the #4 15’s team overall. Amazing job Ladies! And Tera, North Dakota is still too cold…stay a while!
  • The 16-X-Treme, coached by Stephanie Kohner and Lindsay Norman won the 16’s division of the Cactus Classic setting the tone for their season. They started ranked 32nd in the Open Division and finished Regionals 7th overall. Tremendous job Ladies!
  • Our 18-Garra team, coached by Natalie Harris and Giovanna Melo started the season ranked 15th in the ultra competitive 18-Open division and finished the season ranked 6th in the Region.
  • Zia’s first, but not last foray into boy’s volleyball ended with our boy’s team finishing the season ranked 17 th. Considering the team was made up of ages 13-18, it was quite an accomplishment. Zia has committed itself to continuing the growth of boy’s volleyball in the west valley. Next year promises to be even better. Thanks Fellas.
  • The 17-Fury team started the season ranked 20th, but behind a solid effort at Regionals, finished as the #5 ranked 17’s team in the Open division.
  • Zia wants to congratulate our 8 college bound athletes: Michelle Burolla, Lisa Doremus, Aumee Barrett and Shellie Parks who are all headed to Phoenix College, Nicki Wanninger who is headed to Yavapai College in Prescott, Ashley Getz who is headed to Embry Riddle University, also in Prescott, Kelly McDonald who will play for South Mountain Community College next season, and Sarah Reaves who will be playing for Arizona State University in 2007. Congratulations to all these scholarship winners and their families. You have made us proud.
  • In addition, we want to send best wishes out to Angie Bakemeier, Rebekah Hiller and Sarah Fleming who were all married this season. All of these fine young women were Zia athletes and/or coaches who are moving on in their lives. We wish them and their families the best.

  • We want to say Thank You and fond farewell to Kim Eastin who coached her last season with Zia, as her and her husband have moved out to Queen Creek. Kim is also expecting their first child this fall. Kim has been not only a solid player with Zia, and for Phoenix College, but has coached with us the past five seasons and done an outstanding job. Kim, we’ll miss you and thank you.
  • Also, a great big hug goes out to Paula Friesen who will be turning over her many duties to Jenny Croxford this coming season. Paula was the mainstay behind making sure we all had gyms to play and practice in. Without her these past years, Zia would have been in the tall weeds. Thanks so much Paula for all your hard work and efforts. You are amazing!
  • Also, big thanks go out to Lynda Crews who took over the reins of the Club’s fundraising and did a great job. Not very many of you know the amount of time that goes into this job, but it’s time consuming to be sure. Thanks Lynda for doing such a great job.

There aren’t very many clubs in the state let alone the west valley that can boast 5 of their 14 teams, (36%) finishing 7th or higher in their age groups after Regionals and another two that finished in the top 6 before Regionals. (Not bad for a club that doesn’t recruit!)

Our coaches deserve a tremendous amount of credit as well as you all; athletes, parents, families and fans alike. We all share in the success together, and we thank you all.

We look forward to next year and having you with us… Till then!!!

She will be headed up to Yavapai College in the fall to play for the Lady Roughriders on a full ride scholarship. Congratulations Nicki!

Calling All Parents!!!   The Arizona Region of USA Volleyball wants to hear from YOU!!!

The Arizona Region has put on its website a survey, the purpose of which is to gather information from parents on a variety of topics in an effort to improve the information available to parents, both new and experienced to club sports, when making a decision about which club might be best for their son or daughter.

The Junior Division of the Arizona Region of USA Volleyball is interested in your opinions concerning the type of information that is available to parents prior to the beginning of the season.  This survey should only take a few minutes but your participation is key to help make the kinds of changes to continue to improve the Region for all of the members.  Please help us by filling out the survey here.

Thank You.

Harold Cranswick
Commissioner
Arizona Region of USA Volleyball
