Boy’s
Clinic Helps Kick Off Boy’s H.S. Season
With the help of some Lady Sun Devils,
Zia helped kick off the boy’s high school season with a
clinic held February 9 th at Cactus High School.
Zia’s
18-Garra Coaches Natalie Harris, Giovanna Melo (Both former ASU players)
and Margie Giordano (current ASU Player) joined Sydney Donahue,
the ASU libero for a 4 hour clinic touching on the basics and getting
them ready for tryouts which for most of the boys, was the next day.
The ASU Ladies stayed for another hour and a
half after the clinic to offer a free clinic to some interested
Zia athletes 15 and up. Again, some passing, setting and hitting
basics were reviewed by the Sun Devils.
Thanks to the ASU volleyball girls and all those that participated.
Keep
Your Eyes on the Ball!!!
When your coach tells you to
keep your head up and eyes on the ball, think of
this poor soul who actually still has the faded “molten” tattooed
on his neck.
This was shared with us by Wisconsin Assistant Coach
Rod Wilde.
Vegas
Invitational Challenging for All Az. Teams
Zia’s

40 in the 18’s
division, and only one finished in the top 50.
Zia’s 17-Fury took 107 th out of 160 teams

Study: Child obesity expected to soar worldwide
Nearly half of kids in North and South America to
be overweight by 2010
LONDON - The number of overweight children worldwide
will increase significantly by the end of the decade,
and scientists expect profound impacts on everything
from public health care to economies, a study published
Monday said.
Nearly half of the children in North and South America
will be overweight by 2010, up from what recent studies
say is about one-third, according to a report published
by the International Journal of Pediatric Obesity.
In the European
Union, about 38 percent of all children will be overweight
if present trends continue — up
from about 25 percent in recent surveys, the study
said.
“We have truly
a global epidemic which appears to be affecting most
countries in the world,” said Dr. Philip James,
chairman of the International Obesity Task Force and
author of an editorial in the journal warning of the
trend.
The percentages of overweight children also are expected
to increase significantly in the Middle East and Southeast
Asia. Mexico, Chile, Brazil and Egypt have rates comparable
to fully industrialized nations, James said.
He estimated that, for example, one in five children
in China will be overweight by 2010.
“They’re being bombarded like they are
in the West to eat all the wrong foods. The Western
world’s food industries without even realizing
it have precipitated an epidemic with enormous health
consequences,” he said.
More junk food, less exercise
James said living in isolated areas was no longer a safeguard to securing quality
of life or traditional eating habits.
He said children
are “being exposed to the
world’s marketing might,” arguing that
governments should step in. “There needs to be
a ban on all forms of marketing, not just television
adverts.”

Are
Shin Splints Keeping You on the Sidelines?
Our
15-Shockers coach Tera Bahl is a licensed Physical Therapist. She will examine
this month a common problem for volleyball athletes and especially those
that are doubling up with track this spring season, shin splints.
If you are experiencing lower leg pain associated with exercise, the answer
may be yes. Shin splints are most common among runners, accounting for 10-15%
of all running injuries and 60% of all lower leg injuries. Although shin splints
are common in runners, they may also be experienced by athletes who participate
in activities that involve repeated stress/impact on your feet such as basketball,
soccer, tennis and volleyball.
